A new report from MIT Technology Review's AI Hype Index highlights a demo from robotics startup 1X, which showed off a pair of humanoid robots capable of cooking dinner — a milestone in what the publication calls "unsexy AI," practical everyday automation that doesn't generate hype cycles but may matter more over time than the higher-profile projects that do.
Cooking requires dexterous manipulation of irregular objects at variable temperatures in an environment that isn't purpose-built for machines — a significantly harder physical task than warehouse pick-and-place or assembly line automation. The 1X demo places that capability in a domestic context.
The broader framing from MIT Technology Review points to a segment of AI development that's less focused on benchmark performance and more oriented toward household utility. Whether or not 1X's robots are production-ready, the demo represents the direction a meaningful portion of the robotics sector is now working toward.
