The Guardian reports that a New York high school is pressing ahead with plans to deploy a humanoid robot as a classroom teacher — and educators are not staying quiet. Teachers have publicly called the initiative "really inappropriate," arguing that the school is substituting human connection with automation at a time when students are already struggling with isolation and screen addiction.
The objections center on what a classroom actually requires. Teachers raising the alarm point to the relational texture of learning — mentorship, non-verbal cues, the trust built over a semester — as things a humanoid robot cannot replicate. Whether a robot can deliver instruction is not the question being contested; whether instruction is the whole of what a teacher provides is.
No reversal of the plan has been reported. As humanoid robotics costs continue to fall, districts across the country will face pressure to weigh similar trade-offs — and teachers will be there to push back. This flashpoint is unlikely to be the last.
