The anxiety has a concrete trigger. That kind of divergence is difficult to read as bullish for chip demand.
The deeper investor worry is structural: the AI trade was built on the premise that demand for chips would grow without a foreseeable ceiling. But if actual AI product revenue isn't catching up to infrastructure investment, the thesis weakens. The question of whether hyperscalers are approaching peak spend is one that chip stocks are not well-positioned to survive if the answer is yes.
The selloff doesn't resolve that question — but it reflects how quickly sentiment can shift when a single major buyer signals restraint.
